8:00 AM - 9:30 AM Tuesday, December 5

Sabal Ballroom

As leaders in the ever-evolving landscape of organizational learning, our ability to navigate challenges and discover innovative solutions is paramount for the long-term success of our work. Phil Hansen redefined his limitations when faced with a career-ending tremor in his drawing hand; learning leaders can learn to similarly perceive challenges as opportunities for growth and creativity. By embracing our unique constraints, we can tap into our internal resources to unlock our teams’ and organization’s potential.

Join us for this impactful opening keynote, where we will explore how to cultivate creativity within limitations, empowering you to look inward for solutions and inspiration. Through captivating visuals and live interactive art, we will challenge preconceived notions, activate your creative capacity, and unveil fresh perspectives on the tasks at hand. As learning and development leaders, these insights will enable you to approach your work with renewed vision and usher in success through innovative approaches.

Phil Hansen

His inspirational story was first shared on the TED stage to a standing ovation, and then disseminated around the world via features on PBS, BBC, and CCTV. He has spoken at the Adobe MAX Creativity Conference, World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, and the Million Dollar Round Table.

813 Unleashing Organization-wide Collaboration

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Wednesday, December 6

Pindo A

In today’s fast-moving, interconnected society, knowledge-sharing and continuous learning are becoming essential for building organizational agility and resilience, especially as we navigate the challenges of rapid change, distributed work, and talent growth and retention. Traditional approaches emphasizing technology, leadership encouragement, and modeling have failed. It’s time we adopt a new strategy that emphasizes system change for internal social change.

Learning professionals play an important role in advancing all forms of learning, and they sit in an advantageous position to influence the direction leadership will take. But it has a new look! While some may believe that this is outside their purview, learning professionals can and must help shift the conversation toward transferring learning’s ownership from L&D to the individual and unleash people’s natural ability to connect, collaborate, and share knowledge.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The impact of organizational design on employee social behaviors
  • What the research says about when and why attitudes towards connection change
  • How to break down barriers and lead the conversation for change

909 Uncomfortable & Safe: Become an Agent of Positive Change in Uncertain Times

8:00 AM - 10:15 AM Thursday, December 7

Sunburst

Please note: This event spans two session blocks; while participants are free to leave at any time during the session, we ask that you be present at the beginning to participate.

As learning leaders, we are agents of change with everything we touch in our organizations and interactions. Deep, meaningful change requires embracing discomfort, places of dissonance, disequilibrium, and seemingly irreconcilable tensions.

Megan Torrance and Nathan Meidell will begin this highly participatory session by sharing their experience of navigating an uncomfortable difference of values and beliefs that interfered with a burgeoning working relationship. Next, you’ll be drawn into active conversations about how to talk about contentious issues, whether the issue is experiencing or witnessing micro-aggressions or racism at work; interacting with colleagues whose views are at odds on religious, social, or political issues—or any other area that could foster conflict.

The focus is on the process—not on discussion of any specific issue or topic. Through this discussion we will adopt tools and ground rules that equip all of us to move toward mutual understanding and respect—even where there is little agreement. Rather than confrontation or avoidance, learn and practice ways to engage with one another with respect, gentleness, and empathy. Learn to feel safe embracing dissonance rather than focusing on “winning” or “convincing” others.

You may leave the workshop with more questions and discomfort than when you entered. We will build in space at the end of this two-session workshop for personal processing before getting on with the day.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to lead and engage in conversations about difficult or uncomfortable topics
  • To understand that preferences, beliefs, and values exist on a spectrum—and recognize where your conversation partners are on that continuum
  • How to embrace dissonance around contentious issues rather than trying to “win” or convince others of your perspective
  • Tools for engaging on controversial issues respectfully and empathetically

GS04 Inspiring Impact: Maximizing Potential through Learning

10:30 AM - 12:00 PM Thursday, December 7

Sabal Ballroom

One of the most influential factors in the evolution of learners, be it children or adults, is the role of a dedicated, inspiring teacher. As learning and development leaders, we strive to replicate this impact within our organizations. The challenge in this goal often lies in recognizing and emphasizing the vital contributions of these educational leaders, understanding their profound influence on learners, and adapting the insights to shape corporate learning environments.

In the closing keynote for Learning 2023, Deborah Roberts, acclaimed ABC News journalist and author of Lessons Learned and Cherished: The Teacher Who Changed My Life, presents an insightful exploration of the transformative power of educators, drawing from her rich collection of essays from influential figures. Roberts illuminates the immeasurable influence teachers exert on shaping individuals, sparking a deeper understanding of how their methods can be translated into corporate learning strategies. By underlining the real-life success stories, she ignites a profound conversation exploring how we as learning leaders can harness these lessons to develop high-impact learning environments and support our teams to reach their utmost potential.
