GS01 KEYNOTE: The Power of Transformative Design

8:30 AM - 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 26

Grand Ballroom

Design offers so much more than an aesthetically pleasing logo or banner, or a beautification add-on after the heavy lifting. In Reimagining Design, Kevin Bethune shows how design provides a unique angle on problem-solving—how it can be leveraged strategically to cultivate innovation and anchor multidisciplinary teamwork. As he does so, he describes his journey as a Black professional through corporate America, revealing the power of transformative design, multidisciplinary leaps, and diversity. Bethune, who began as an engineer at Westinghouse, moved on to Nike (where he designed Air Jordans), and now works as a sought-after consultant on design and innovation, shows how design can transform both individual lives and organizations.

In Bethune's account, diversity, equity, and inclusion emerge as a recurring theme. He shows how as we leverage design for innovation, we also need to consider the broader ecological implications of our decisions and acknowledge the threads of systemic injustice in order to realize positive change. Design transformation takes leadership—leaders who do not act as gatekeepers but with agility and nimbleness build teams that mirror the marketplace.

Design in harmony with other disciplines can be incredibly powerful; multidisciplinary team collaboration is the foundation of future innovation. With insight and compassion, Bethune provides a framework for bringing this about.

EXPOA101 RIP to Manual Course Packaging: How SANS Streamlines Content Distribution

10:10 AM - 10:40 AM Wednesday, October 26

Expo Hall

This session will be available live onsite as well as streamed online. Registration is required for the live stream. Register for the live stream here.

Are you buried in work from managing a growing course catalog? See how delivering and maintaining training across multiple systems doesn't have to leave you feeling like a zombie. You'll hear how the SANS Institute shifted their content distribution model to save hundreds of administration hours, ensure accuracy for high risk content, protect intellectual property, and gain visibility into course utilization.

You invest a lot of time and energy creating courses when building custom learning and training solutions, publishing commercial content, or having courses spread across multiple internal systems. And chances are, you want to deliver that content in a way that's compatible with every LMS, manageable for admins, and easy for learners to access. This was the case for Dan deBeaubien with the SANS Institute, a global leader in information cyber security training, when they started their journey to solving their content distribution problems.

During this session you'll hear how SANS was able to dig out from under the growing burden of managing content delivery, solve internal challenges, and improve their customers' experience with their training programs when they incorporated Rustici Software's Content Controller solution. This was no easy feat considering that they deliver more than a million training modules per week to over six million learners worldwide and in multiple languages. Before using Content Controller, SANS was on the brink of an apocalypse as their team spent hundreds of hours on content administration alone to manage delivering and updating courses individually to each client LMS. Not to mention struggling with how to gracefully handle the 28 languages they offer without exponentially increasing the admin burden. They also lacked insight into content usage patterns and had a difficult time managing licenses. Since adding Content Controller to their arsenal, they've slayed their content management foes, seamlessly delivered multi-language content that's compatible with multiple systems, automatically served new versions to learners, and controlled access all from a single course library.

Technology discussed:

Content Controller, LCMS, LMS, course library, eLearning, xAPI, cmi5, SCORM

101 BYOD: No Fear! The World's Gentlest Introduction to Coding with JavaScript

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Wednesday, October 26

Trinidad AB

While the recognition that coding is an integral part of eLearning's future is pervasive, the opportunities for a gentle entry into the world of coding are elusive. People are frequently apprehensive about learning to code because it is perceived as highly complex and even mythical in nature. Coding is commonly taught in a technical context, leading people to think that they have to be highly technical and good at math to be successful. While these and other myths surround the world of coding, the reality is that just about anybody can learn the fundamentals and become more comfortable talking about code.

This session is designed to debunk many of the common myths around coding while allowing you to write your first lines of code. The ultimate goal of the session is to help you transition from an apprehensive but curious non-coder to a professional who can speak about code and has successfully written some JavaScript. The presentation will help you remove some of the apprehension around coding and give you a vocabulary to discuss coding-related issues within your projects.

The session will begin by reviewing the process of creating a simple program and executing it within your web browser. You'll be invited to write code line-by-line along with the facilitator. You'll be using the JavaScript programming language. Not only is JavaScript the most utilized language in the world, but it is also the language that provides an engine for eLearning. Learning management systems, augmented and virtual reality, and xAPI are all driven by JavaScript under the hood. The language also doesn't require any special tools or software—all you need is a text editor and web browser to begin. At the end, you will be provided options for continuing your learning with available resources that work well for coding beginners.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The biggest myths that prevent people from learning to code
  • The basic coding structures found in every programming language
  • How to write and execute JavaScript code on your own
  • How JavaScript is used in the eLearning ecosystem
  • How to read code and discuss it with developers, even if you aren't one
  • Additional resources to continue learning JavaScript coding if you wish

Technology discussed:

Web browsers, JavaScript, authoring tools

Participant technology requirements:

This is a step-by-step tutorial style session where individuals will write and execute code on their own machines. Bring a laptop with web browser and text editor.

102 BYOD: Personalized PDF On the Fly from Articulate Storyline

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Wednesday, October 26

Andros AB

Extending learning beyond the online course to support performance on the job can produce more effective outcomes. Whether it is a customized job aid, personalized checklist, a guided self-assessment, or simply a certificate with key takeaways, a downloadable PDF is a common option for designers. However, creating a customized PDF on the fly used to be a time consuming, error-prone, and tedious activity mostly done by highly-skilled developers. In this hands-on session you will use Articulate Storyline, along with a more flexible yet robust PDF creation tool written in JavaScript.

In this hands-on session you will use Articulate Storyline to capture data for a personalized action plan learners can download in a PDF format. First, you'll explore an existing solution to experience the process. You'll then create a data architecture design to document what data you want to capture form Storyline and where that data will show in the PDF. Next, you'll use Adobe Acrobat to prepare the PDF. (We'll also share some time-saving tips on how to use PowerPoint to speed up this part of the design.) In this example, you will include the name, role, timeline, and an avatar for the user, and then list the selected actions along with links to supporting materials and a checkbox for completion. The PDF will be created on the fly by a JavaScript library called pdf-lib. You can use the library under MIT license for free. Finally, you'll use JavaScript triggers in Storyline to integrate the data source and the PDF library. The session only covers the basics of the process but we'll explore some more advanced examples and you'll walk away with the source files to build your own application. We'll end the session with a brainstorming activity to get you inspired on how you could implement this technology for your audience.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to create a personalized PDF on the fly from Storyline
  • How to capture and transfer Storyline variables into the PDF
  • How to simplify the PDF design by using PowerPoint
  • How to include custom images in the PDF

Technology discussed:

Articulate Storyline, JavaScript, pdf-lib JavaScript library, Adobe Acrobat

Participant technology requirements:

Articulate Storyline 3.0 or 360, a text editor for JavaScript code (Notepad++,  Sublime Text 3, Atom, or similar), and Adobe Acrobat DC

106 Case Study: Leveraging a Chatbot Coach for Workflow Learning

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Wednesday, October 26

Martinique AB

Finding a technology or methodology that can effectively both prompt and react to learners in the flow of work is a foundational problem for L&D teams. How do learners access the help they need in a frictionless and easy way? How do learning teams push out useful information in a way that the learner is happy to receive?

In this session you'll see a case study of how Kaiser Permanente leveraged a chatbot to engage learners who were part of a GROW leadership initiative. You'll see how chatbots engaged these learners in a frictionless way and how Kaiser optimized training content for this unique medium. With the boon of collaboration platforms like Microsoft Teams, it's now easier than ever to get resources in the hands of learners without the hurdles of complicated systems to navigate around. A chatbot on these platforms takes that ease a step further by creating both a "push" and "pull" mechanism for delivering content, "pushing" reminders and nudges and "pulling" content when learners request help. You'll leave this session with a new appreciation of the power and efficacy of making things easy for learners, as well as a sense of the effort it requires to design a chatbot for learning, and its accompanying ROI.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How a complex organization like Kaiser Permanente decided on a workflow of learning approach
  • How a chatbot can be deployed to learners via SMS, Microsoft Teams, or Slack
  • Lessons learned in designing the personality behind chatbot interactions for learners
  • How to design a chatbot to both push proactive nudges as well as respond to learner inquiries

107 6 Decisions to Make When Designing Online Software Training

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Wednesday, October 26

Montego A

Whether you are rolling out a new time-and-attendance system, upgrading your accounting software, or sharing the best tips and tricks on Microsoft Excel, eLearning can be a great way to get software training out to the people in your organization. But how do you approach such a project? Before recording simulations in tools like Captivate, Storyline, or Camtasia, you‚Äôve got some important decisions to make.

  • Should they just sit back and watch, or do they need to practice?
  • Should we teach all the ways to do something or just one way?
  • Do we really need a lesson on how to log in?

In this session, you‚Äôll look at six key design decisions you‚Äôll need to make when creating online software training. You‚Äôll tackle everything from deciding if you should teach just the procedural steps or teach underlying business rules to structuring practice activities so they provide just enough support to help your learners be successful.

You’ll walk away with specific tips on how to tackle issues like these:

  • They don‚Äôt just need to know where to click‚Äîthey need to know how to make decisions and adjust their workflow.
  • This needs to work for folks who know the old system, as well as people new to the organization.
  • I call it a menu, but my co-worker calls it a drop-down.
  • A lot of this is self-explanatory, but that might not be true for everyone.
  • I need to start developing but the software isn‚Äôt done yet.

You’ll get to see real, live examples of different options so you can get a real sense of what the learner experience would be like and how that approach might work in your environment.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to uncover the needs of your learners around software training
  • How to get the right people on the team and the right access to the system you‚Äôre training on
  • To balance the need for ‚Äúwhere-to-click‚Äô training with the need for business process training
  • To use clear, consistent language when writing scripts or procedural steps
  • How to design practices with just the right amount of support and guidance
  • How to adjust your process when encountering delays or changes to the software.

111 Creating Engaging Experiences for a Hybrid Work Environment

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Wednesday, October 26

St Croix AB

Hours of VILT and longer-form eLearning is still the norm, more than two years into our new normal. In a recent global L&D study, respondents identified concerns about learner engagement, participation, and attendance in digital and virtual solutions as a result of rapidly assembled and converted in-house designs. Many L&D professionals report that their virtual/digital designs are less effective than their face-to-face counterparts. Learners' time has never been more at a premium, and things aren't likely to "go back to the way they used to be." It's time for us as an industry to deliver world-class, innovative experiences that align with the needs of our hybrid workforces.

In this session, you'll learn strategies and techniques around microlearns, flipped classroom experiences, and social learning that can be woven into a digital frame and layered in group time only when it matters most, and in a repeatable way that produces the necessary performance outcomes. You’ll learn that the hybrid environment does not have to be a barrier to building and implementing quality learning experiences that work—in fact, it has created many new opportunities! You'll leave with the templates and tools to put it all to work and share with your team the minute you get back to the office.

In this session, you will learn:

  • To factor in the Learn, Apply, Reflect, Refine approach to create modern, resonant learning designs
  • How to create modern-modal learning experiences that fit into a busy work environment where it's easy to be distracted, multitask, or just "watch the recording later"
  • To build innovative designs that support the needs of all learners when some are on-site some of the time, some are never on-site, and others are on-site all the time
  • To design group experiences that make the most of collective group time and draw your learners in ways that are similar to a more traditional face-to-face format

EXPOA103 3 Ways to Improve Training ROI With Inbox Simulations

12:15 PM - 12:45 PM Wednesday, October 26

Expo Hall

The value of a highly-skilled workforce is undeniable, but only 25% of business executives believe that training measurably improves business performance. While we've become quite adept at instilling foundational knowledge, the one-size-fits-all, knowledge-based approaches to training we rely on lack the science-based ingredients for meaningful skill development. To turn L&D into your competitive advantage, you need to overcome three critical challenges: Accurately identifying soft skills gaps to ensure the right people get the right training; providing relevant, real-world application to increase the transfer of learning; and measuring training impact.

Join us as we introduce you to inbox simulations and how this new simulation-based assessment technology gives talent management teams the ability to assess and develop the skills that matter most. We'll walk you through three case studies and how each company uses inbox simulations to improve training ROI:

  • How Yellow corporation uses inbox simulations to identify skills gaps to fast-track emerging leaders
  • How a military defense contractor uses inbox simulations to assess program managers in an authentic context
  • How Microsoft uses inbox simulation to measure the impact of their hands-on training for technical leaders

EXPOC103 Inclusion & Accessibility: Why it Matters and What You Can Do

12:15 PM - 12:45 PM Wednesday, October 26

Expo Hall

As learning developers, we work hard to develop interesting, educating, and engaging courses. And since we work so hard at developing our content, our goal should be to enhance the quality of learning and meet the learning needs and style of as many people as possible. While learning styles (most often referred to as visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/physical) are important, I want to challenge all of us that we need to think about so much more. If we are to ensure knowledge is delivered clearly and concisely to and for everyone, we need to develop our courses to meet the needs of all learners by ensuring our courses are inclusive and accessible to all learners. Again, you work hard on your eLearning content—you want as many users as possible to see and learn from it, along with users actually wanting to use it, and ultimately feeling safe using it.

Discussion topics include:

  • Understanding the definitions of accessibility and inclusion; how they overlap, and why they are not the same thing
  • Understanding WCAG & POUR and how it affects you and eLearning
  • Explaining why designing learning for everyone is becoming a requirement at most organizations, and why organizations financially benefit from it
  • Understanding what your bias are and how to overcome them
  • Examples of accessibility and inclusivity in eLearning, including word choices, photos & illustrations, and audio/voiceovers
  • Reviewing how screen readers (NVDA & Jaws) and keyboard navigation actually ‚Äúreads‚Äù your eLearning course
  • Reviewing tools and checklists to properly vet your learning programs

202 BYOD: Accessibility for Beginners: Quick and Easy Strategies to Implement Today

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Wednesday, October 26

Andros AB

Closed captions, alt text, keyboard navigation—where does one even get started when building in accessibility? It may seem daunting but accessibility is more important than ever. Accessibility features not only make online learning usable for the one-in-five people that have a disability, but also benefit anyone that works in a loud environment (closed captions), anyone with fatigue from extended computer work (color contrast), and anyone that likes to skim material to find what they need quickly (headings). Let's talk simple strategies that will make your training and courses better and more usable!

In this session we'll practice simple strategies for building accessibility into your learning projects. There are many quick and stress-free ways to build in accessibility features from the very start, or to retrofit an existing project. Learners will get started right away with hands-on practice, and they will walk away with an accessibility checklist and workflows. This session will cover what accessibility is, how to avoid common accessibility pitfalls, how to implement the most important accessibility features, and we'll also practice analyzing accessibility of existing content.  We will practice using Microsoft Word, as the accessibility features available in Word are highly representative of those you'll find in other authoring software. We'll also practice creating and downloading closed captions using YouTube. Finally, we'll practice analyzing accessibility of existing content using WAVE, a free tool.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The definition of accessibility and 508 compliance
  • To identify the most critical accessible features
  • How to implement alt text and closed captions
  • Accessible formatting of documents and web documents
  • How to write accessible copy for the web
  • How to analyze accessibility of online content using WAVE

204 The Evolution of Microlearning: Contextual Microlearning

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Wednesday, October 26

St Croix AB

In the age of YouTube, Tik Tok, Twitter, etc., it is harder than ever to make sure that our employees are getting the information they need at their moment of need. Microlearning has gained a lot of traction as a solution to this attention deficit. Many organizations have realized that providing targeted information to their employees in micro formats is more effective compared to long articles and courses. However, the traditional microlearning concept still requires the learner to step out of context to search and discover the information. Wouldn't it be great if the information came to the learner instead of the learner searching for the information?

Context is becoming ever more important. Microlearning by itself is good but contextual microlearning is better. This session will discuss and then show examples side-by-side of what microlearning versus contextual microlearning looks like. We will start by looking at the history of how microlearning formats came to be and what challenges was it looking to solve. We will look at very specific examples of how microlearning works within organizations and also outside of it. We will explore the learner’s journey as it looks today. Then we will talk about what is still working with microlearning and what is not. We will explore the concept and cost of context switching. The demonstrations will show the power of contextual microlearning and how beneficial it is when information is brought to the user at her moment of need, in context of her own environment, and within the flow of her work.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How microlearning came to be and what challenges it looked to solve
  • Why traditional microlearning is not as effective as it used to be
  • What contextual microlearning is
  • The differences between microlearning and contextual microlearning
  • How to apply contextual microlearning within your organization
  • How to calculate return on investment of contextual microlearning to see if it's working or not

205 More Than a Game: Motivating Change Through Behavior-based Games

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Wednesday, October 26

Martinique AB

Are you struggling to motivate your learners and considering adding game mechanics? Or are you using gamification in your training but you aren't getting the desired results from the courses? Sure, games are fun and you'd think that would be enough to engage learners, however, you must be careful. You can disengage learners if they cannot connect the purpose of the game to a desired outcome. The key to making the rewards, points, and other game mechanics effective is to use them to motivate and encourage specific behavior.

In this session you will up your game (your instructional design game, that is) by learning how to design effective, engaging, and relevant game mechanics that motivate learners to perform desired behaviors. First, you'll discover exactly what gamification is beyond the points and badges, and more importantly, what gamification is not. You'll learn when and when not to use gamification. Then you'll go through the gamification design process step-by-step, seeing lots of specific examples and scenarios. By the end of the session, you will be able to qualify business goals and learning objectives for gamification, and create behavioral-based games the get results and keep learners engaged.

In this session, you will learn:

  • What gamification is and what it is not
  • Why gamification isn't always the best training solution
  • The best situations to use game mechanics in training
  • How to tie game mechanics to a business goal and learning objectives
  • The methodology for designing game mechanics that motivates desired behaviors

208 Into the Metaverse: Nine Superpowers of VR Learning

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Wednesday, October 26

Barbados AB

Global HVAC leader Daikin faces the challenge of selling industrial chillers big as a bus to smart buyers who want to "kick the tires" before investing in equipment that needs to last 50 years. Pharma leaders Pfizer, Novartis, and Bristol Myers Squibb need to train technicians on how to conduct lab experiments, compound drugs, gown and glove, and practice safety protocol with limited physical training labs and SMEs to train people on skills where mistakes have life and death consequences. Walmart, the world's largest employer, has to attract and develop a new generation of managers who have spent more time playing games than they have in the classroom. Meanwhile, Alarm.com faced the challenge of training field technicians to install commercial access control solutions that integrate with their unified, cloud-based security platform.

Think-forward companies are harnessing real-time 3-D learning to reduce training costs, improve job performance, and boost engagement at scale. Activating touch, sight, and hearing, their virtual reality (VR) programs create sensory experiences of such convincing verisimilitude that the brain suspends disbelief and generates a feeling of "presence." This is not a talk about VR—in this session you’ll step inside multi-user VR simulations from the stage to demonstrate what they look like. The case studies and demos will showcase how a team of top-tier simulation designers can harness emerging consumer tech to unlock "10x" learning effectiveness with the nine superpowers of VR learning. Visionary organizations are already harnessing the unlimited flexibility of the virtual world to upend enterprise training and human performance as we know it. Connecting the physical and the 3-D digital worlds in real-time is the promise of the "enterprise metaverse." This is the future of training. And that future just arrived. We will demo and answer your questions in this interactive session.

In this session, you will learn:

  • To identify a VR pilot, build the business case, overcome obstacles, and partner with professionals to develop VR sims in a real-time game engine
  • How students can interact seamlessly in a multi-player VR performance environment to learn with and from each other
  • To deploy VR at scale with device and content management platforms, advanced analytics, and LMS/LRS reporting

210 The Intersection Between Learning, Performance & Optimization

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Wednesday, October 26

Montego DE

Learning teams often receive requests for training without having the opportunity to provide consultation/gap analysis to identify whether the issue is truly a training need or if a non-training solution would be more appropriate. Post-training reports from the client may indicate minimal change in employee behavior as a result of the training. In other words, there is a performance problem that remains unresolved, despite favorable survey and knowledge assessment results. Why? Not all performance problems can be solved with training.

In this session, you will learn how to integrate a simple performance consulting framework that moves you from taking training orders to becoming a trusted partner in helping the business reach its desired performance goals. This means you are moving from a design mindset to a performance mindset. You will explore how learning departments can not only design and develop various training solutions, but analyze performance gaps and recommend solutions that are evidence-based and optimize processes along the way. We will look at important steps to help design and develop performance-focused solutions and measure intervention effectiveness to ensure the performance gap is closed. You will explore how the performance model relies on a strong feedback loop, good use of data, and evidence-based decision making. These skills are the foundation of building and strengthening client partnerships that move you from taking training requests to being a business partner.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to integrate a performance consulting framework to move from a design mindset to a performance mindset
  • How to analyze performance gaps and recommend solutions that are evidence-based and optimize processes along the way
  • How to design and develop performance-focused solutions

305 Find Your Friction: How You May Be Driving Learners Away

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 26

Antiqua A

You've built great content, but your learners don't seem to care. They're not engaging with your learning. Why? Companies spend billions of dollars trying to understand consumer behavior, resulting in marketing strategies aimed at getting consumers to buy their products. In those same organizations, there are L&D groups that are not leveraging the same insights and strategies to reach their learners. Treat your solution like a product and minimize the friction between your solutions and your learners.

This session will examine the Fogg Behavior Model and how companies seek to minimize "friction" between us as consumers and their product offerings, providing the path of least resistance. If you look at your learning solutions as a product that you want your learners to consume, where are you creating friction that discourages those learning consumers? And what can you do about it? You'll leave this session with a "friction assessment" of your learning ecosystem, along with a toolkit of strategies you can explore to minimize that friction in your organization. Moreover, you'll leave with a new perspective on your learners, their motivations, and how you can best reach them.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to apply the Fogg Behavior Model to identify points of friction in your learning ecosystem
  • To complete a friction assessment to identify opportunities for improvement
  • To identify potential solutions to the friction in your learning ecosystem
  • Over 20 tools and techniques to reduce friction

306 Gamify Your Course Design Process

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 26

St Thomas AB

The communication between the client (stakeholder and/or SME) and designer to create a gamified course can be challenging. Gamification is evolving and the request to gamify a course, program, or beyond can mean different things to different people. The client is often unaware of the time necessary to bring their idea to fruition. What if there was a way, at the start of the process, to provide a more realistic idea of the costs, options, and time required to bring the vision to life?

In this session, you'll learn how to effectively determine the goals of the project, inform stakeholders of gamification options, possible solutions, and communicate the associated costs to create the course or program. The key to success is having the stakeholders experience gamification elements through a gamified intake process. This is accomplished through creating a virtual shopping experience. Starting with a list of elements desired, the stakeholders will use their list to pick and choose items from the store shelves and then "checkout" of the store. As the cart is filled with items, the stakeholders can comparison shop, make budget and time decisions, and test various elements. Most people have experienced online shopping so by creating a relatable, realistic, intuitive experience, this facilitates a collaborative creative process by fostering effective communication while minimizing unnecessary revisions and expense. You'll leave this session with a new appreciation for gamification strategy and practical means to accomplish your goals.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to effectively apply gamification methods and strategy
  • How effectively communicate this strategy to stakeholders and all involved on the project
  • How to efficiently gather project details through a gamified strategy
  • How to seamlessly communicate the associated costs of the project to the project team
  • What it takes to create a solution that meets the needs and expectations of the project team
  • How to design an engaging intake experience

308 Tools for Hybrid Work: Transform Instructional Design Using Design Thinking

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 26

Barbados AB

A 2022 HCM Outlook Study shows that at least two-thirds of organizations are challenged with redefining their culture and work environments. This means reimagining their employee and leadership development and also improving employee recruitment and reward. Learning is shifting from tactical to strategic in order to support organizational success while adapting to the current and future landscape. The whole organization needs to think differently, act differently, and become human-centric. Success requires leaders to rise from the comfort of "how we've always done it," apply new tools for engagement that enable L&D upskilling initiatives to focus on disparately located learners, demonstrate how each contributor is valued, and increase their engagement and feeling of belonging‚Äîall while transforming their skills to optimize business performance.

In this session, we will discuss the current and future landscape of instructional design as it relates to hybrid work environments. LXD adaptation today requires creativity, innovation, and practicality. Proven instructional design methods combined with design thinking tools will allow attendees to visualize the current state of their L&D, utilize new tools to build learner-focused journeys, and continuously adapt to transform their organizations.

In this session, you will learn:

  • To visualize the current and potential future L&D landscape in a hybrid work environment
  • How to utilize current instructional design methods combined with design thinking tools to drive transformation
  • To build human-centric, learner-focused journeys to upskill/reskill people and the organization
  • Tools to use right away to start your organization's transformation towards performance, growth, and success in a hybrid work environment

309 Slide-based vs Responsive eLearning: The Who, What, When, and Why

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 26

Montego A

There's a lot of eLearning out there. Traditionally it's all been slide-based (think Storyline or Captivate) but the advent of new authoring tools and learners' desire to complete courses on various devices has made responsive eLearning (think Rise or Evolve) more popular. How do you know what's right for you as a designer/developer, or most importantly, how do you know which is the right one for your audience and what they need to learn?

We'll explore the what, when, why, and who for each approach in this session. Specifically, we'll discuss WHAT is slide-based and what is responsive, including the benefits and drawbacks for each. We'll look at examples of WHEN to use them and WHY each could be the correct choice for your project. Finally, we'll look at WHO the key players (vendors or platforms) are for each type of eLearning (including the benefits and drawbacks for the most common tools). You'll walk away with a solid understanding of how and when to select the right approach for your project.

In this session, you will learn:

  • What slide-based learning is and when to use it
  • What responsive learning is and when to use it
  • The top authoring tools for each and the pros/cons for each
  • How to decide what's right for your project

311 20 Ways to Use Microlearning to Add Value to Your Curriculum

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 26

St Croix AB

Microlearning is one of the least understood trends in our industry right now. Everyone wants to "go micro" and every vendor says their solution includes microlearning. However, there are many different use cases and formats for microlearning, so although everyone says they're using microlearning, they are all doing something vastly different. This creates a tremendous challenge for us to identify best design practices, delivery approaches, and implementation methods. When we actually understand HOW we are going micro, we have a far greater chance of doing it successfully.

In this session, you'll identify how to go micro with the greatest impact in your curriculum. First we'll share four primary use cases for microlearning and look at real examples of these different types of microlearning used successfully in organizations today. Then you will consider how you can use these types of microlearning in your own curriculum. Then we'll get tactical. We'll identify 20 ways to go micro and you will identify which of these 20 ways would work best in your curriculum so you can walk away with specific ideas for how you can capitalize on microlearning–in real and tangible ways–in your own work. You will leave this session with fresh ideas for incorporating microlearning successfully in your curriculum.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Four uses of microlearning
  • Five formats of microlearning
  • Twenty ways you can use microlearning
  • How to use microlearning to make the greatest difference in your curriculum

EXPOC106 How AAA Redesigned Desktop for Mobile While Driving Engagement

3:30 PM - 4:00 PM Wednesday, October 26

Expo Hall

It seems that each new advance in technology brings with it both opportunities and unique challenges. Upgrading and re-tooling legacy courseware presents a significant design challenge as well as a development effort. There is no great sausage grinder in the sky that will magically take old straw and spin it into new gold. When AAA was faced with the challenge of upgrading and updating their novice driver training program, they turned to ELB Learning for assistance and together we reimagined 30 hours of courseware, from core content through final delivery, chalking up successes and learning lessons along the way.

Attendees in this session will explore three key components for successfully re-designing courseware for mobile delivery:

  • Analyzing content and interactions to identify key performance requirements and match them to the right types of activities optimized for mobile delivery
  • Leveraging 3-D motion video to create a library of cost effective, high-quality still images

GS02 KEYNOTE: Blowing Up Stereotypes in Learning

4:15 PM - 5:15 PM Wednesday, October 26

Grand Ballroom

There's a long list of stereotypes that can get in the way of learning. These widely held assumptions affect the way people view their own ability to learn. Many of these stereotypes are so embedded in our cultures that they can affect our practice as learning professionals through unconscious bias. In order to design truly effective and inclusive learning programs, we must find ways to break through these stereotypes and biases.

Dr. Kate Biberdorf has been blowing up stereotypes for years —quite literally. Through her theatrical and hands-on approach to teaching that has been seen by millions on television like the Today Show and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Dr. Biberdorf is breaking down the image of the stereotypical scientist and reaching students who might otherwise be intimidated by science. During this explosive keynote filled with entertaining experiments, Dr. Biberdorf will share how she breaks through the assumptions people have about how we teach and what we can learn.

Kate Biberdorf

Professor and Director of Demonstrations and Outreach Department of Chemistry

University of Texas

Dr. Kate Biberdorf is a professor and director of demonstrations and outreach for the Department of Chemistry at University of Texas in Austin. She loves to break stereotypes and blow things up—all in a good pair of heels. Her theatrical, hands-on approach is designed to excite those who are intimidated by science, and demonstrate that science can be entertaining and fun. Noting that there are obstacles facing many women who pursue careers in STEM fields, she is especially interested in inspiring young women to pursue careers in science. Biberdorf has appeared on a wide variety of television shows including The Today Show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, NBC Nightly News, the Wendy Williams Show, the Rachael Ray Show, and Late Night with Stephen Colbert. A prolific author, she has penned many books including Kate the Chemist: The Big Book of Experiments, a collection of 25 kid-friendly science experiments, Dragons vs. Unicorns, a novel about a young female scientist, and It's Elemental: The Hidden Chemistry in Everything, which examines how we experience science every day of our lives. She delights audiences with the magic of chemistry. Her repertoire of on-stage experiments includes combustion, and shows often end with her dumping a vat of hot water into a bucket of liquid nitrogen, creating an epic thunder cloud. Biberdorf holds a BS in chemistry and German from the University of Michigan, and a PhD in inorganic chemistry from The University of Texas.

406 Building Better VR Solutions with Learning Engineering Practices

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Thursday, October 27

Martinique AB

Virtual reality (VR) is becoming an increasingly popular medium for delivering learning experiences, yet there has been little defined in terms of solid frameworks and best practices for immersive learning experience design. This can make designing VR learning solutions feel like a shot in the dark, hoping you won't miss the mark fulfilling learning objectives and achieving learning efficacy. This is where learning engineering processes can help us. We don't need to guess whether our design is sound or leads to favorable outcomes—data can tell us about our design's effectiveness. Learning engineering helps us build better VR learning experiences.

This session will equip you with the knowledge you'll need to implement learning engineering practices and processes to design and measure learning within your virtual reality solutions. We'll discuss using the cycle of questioning, collecting data, deriving insights, and applying our findings to our models and solutions to further improve conditions of learning. You'll learn how you can apply learning science research to guide decisions pertaining to learning design, interaction design, measurement methodology, and the overall immersive experience of your VR solution through the lens of several VR use cases. You'll discover how modeling helps to inform design choices and we'll unpack examples of various models that you can apply to your immersive learning design, including the learner model, domain model, and activity model. We'll discuss how learning engineers employ instrumentation to collect data to test their hypotheses and assumptions, which can then be analyzed and interpreted to shed light on their research and design questions. By instrumenting and analyzing data, you'll be able to discover what about your VR solution works, why it works, identify critical issues, develop targeted solutions, and most importantly, scale what works through iterative, evidence-based design.

In this session, you will learn:

  • What learning engineering is, the processes and practices involved, and how they can be applied to the design and iterative development of VR learning solutions
  • How you can apply learning science research and human-centered engineering design methodologies to the design and development of your VR learning solutions
  • How you can use modeling (knowledge domain, activity, and learner) to craft a comprehensive view of the learner and their environment, which helps set the foundation for initial design and subsequent data-informed iterations of your VR learning experience
  • How you can use instrumentation to gain insights about learners, learning models, instructional scaffolding, the immersive experience, and product efficacy to make data-driven decisions to improve your learning design

407 Leveling Up Your Videos: Getting Better in a Scalable Way

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Thursday, October 27

Jamaica AB

Video is ubiquitous in instructional content. It can be the main content,  a supplement to virtual or instructor-led sessions, or part of interactive learning modules. The space for videos has never been more clear. But just turning on and pointing the video camera really isn't enough. From TV to YouTube, we're surrounded by high-quality examples. It seems like everyone is making better-looking and better-sounding videos. You don't have to be left behind, and you don't need a huge budget. We'll look at a variety of ways you can level up your videos in a scalable, approachable way.

During this session we will define what 'good video' is and should be. Next, we'll look at the process and pieces needed for video creation. What strategies can be applied to improve each section? Rather than look at each one and just throw out a bunch of ideas, we'll be borrowing the approach from author James Clear's book, Atomic Habits, and approaching our video creation skills with a growth mindset of the 'aggregation of marginal gains.' We'll look at how some small changes can add up to huge improvements and quality outcomes in the areas of pre-production (e.g., scripting and objective setting), production (recording and creating materials), and post production (e.g., editing.) During the session you'll be presented with lessons learned from experienced video creators, several key best practices, and suggestions for avoiding pitfalls and making improvements. We'll also explore opportunities where having a budget, even a modest one, might help, and what to do if you don't have any. You'll leave the session with resources to help you put a plan of improvement into place.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Standard processes and workflows for effectively creating videos
  • Ways you can make small improvements to increase the quality and effectiveness of your videos
  • Recommended best practices as suggested by other video creators about quality and process improvements
  • About a variety of resources available that can help you on your video learning journey

408 Using Frameworks to Empower SMEs to Develop Their Own Learning Programs

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Thursday, October 27

Montego A

Are you challenged with more requests for training content than your team can provide? This has become the reality for many large organizations, and we are all struggling. Your success comes from your ability to scale the development aspect of your programs without adding staff to do it. The good news is that your SMEs can help...and many want to. But we need to help them first.

In this session you will learn about eight frameworks our learning team built and is providing to our SMEs so they can self-serve when it comes to content and program creation. The eight frameworks include podcast-format interviews or discussions, masterclass, virtual summits, lunch-and-learn, bootcamps, cohorts, informal mentorships, and self-paced SME-created content. The goal of using these frameworks is to empower your SMEs to perform more of the "heavy-lifting" that comes with training program development. This allows you, the learning team, to take on more projects and scale your capabilities to improve your business. In the end, if we can get our various teams around the company to self-serve and create content and programs that are "good enough," as a learning team we can be better positioned to advise, guide, and package that content so it meets the learning needs and we can meet the ever-growing training demands of our business. To demonstrate the value of using frameworks, you will have an opportunity to practice applying these frameworks to real-world scenarios with your fellow participants. As a participant, you will receive all eight of our frameworks to take back to your business and apply them to your own situations.

In this session, you will learn:

  • To describe the basic frameworks we have put in place
  • To create frameworks that meet your unique situations
  • How to apply the frameworks to common business scenarios
  • To deconstruct what the pros and cons of the frameworks might be in a real-world environment

412 Driving Change with Journey Mapping

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Thursday, October 27

St Thomas AB

As learning program designers, we spend a lot of time explaining our programs to internal stakeholders. Each stakeholder is often siloed and only cares about a certain part of our program. What happens when these programs aren't performing as needed for our learners and organizations? How do we communicate that change is needed across various teams to drive better results? Gathering leadership and stakeholder feedback on what a learning program should be is daunting. We need a way to make program design fun and engaging for our stakeholders. We need to give them safe spaces to listen and learn from each other so they can drive the organizational change that makes life easier for our learners and our business.

In this session you'll hear real-life stories about how learning journey mapping was used to drive organizational change at large and small-scale businesses. You'll learn how journey maps are a collaborative tool that enable the sharing of ideas, aligning of decisions, and help achieve a common understanding of learner and business goals. You'll learn how mapping workshops give high-level leaders a safe space to voice their concerns and envision how an organization has to work together to fix performance issues. You'll learn about the key outcomes that leaders found most eye-opening about the mapping experience, including how to act on the results of the journey mapping workshop. You'll learn about the different levels of formality a journey map can take and how to chose which level is appropriate for your analysis. You'll leave this session with an overview of how journey mapping can drive organizational change that not only benefits your learners, but your business as well.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How journey mapping enables collaboration and alignment throughout an organization
  • How organizations have used journey maps to take action towards improving learner performance
  • How mapping workshops create an open atmosphere to gather ideas and concerns from leadership, while considering a more ideal future-state
  • How to determine the level of detail or formality you need in your map based on your company‚Äôs maturity and goals

EXPOC202 Accessible eLearning: Why Bother?!

11:10 AM - 11:40 AM Thursday, October 27

Expo Hall

I mean, really–what’s all the fuss about? No one in your organization has a disability–you’d know, right? And besides, someone with a disability couldn’t do the job you’re creating training for. And even if they could, you can just make a PDF of the transcript for them, right?
(Umm…pardon me for interrupting…but exactly none of this is true.)

Join us for this helpful–and maybe a little sarcastic–session. You’ll learn to manage some of the misconceptions, challenges, and opportunities we have as an industry to remove barriers for individuals with disabilities.

Key takeaways:

  • Why accessibility is not worth the time and trouble (Umm‚Ķunless you care about human beings at all!)
  • How drag-and-drop questions are ESSENTIAL to eLearning no matter who they exclude (Umm‚Ķmost of what you‚Äôve learned in your life you learned without dragging and dropping anything.)
  • How the accessibility standards are impossible to understand and implement (OK, this is a little bit true. But come see us; we can help.)

EXPOD202 Dissection of Project Utilizing Game Design: A Discussion

11:10 AM - 11:40 AM Thursday, October 27

Expo Hall

Designers are often told to create game-based courses but find themselves unsure of the overall training goals. Without that clarity, it's difficult to make the first decisions. It's important to understand the principles behind game-based learning and how it can be applied properly when creating a course. As game-based course experts, Paul Schneider, PhD, dominKnow, and Shrikant Pattathil, Harbinger Interactive Learning, will utilize a game-based learning example to review best practices and guidance that you can apply to your own unique situations.

In this session, you'll get an inside track into understanding the thinking and thought process behind developing game-based learning. We will first examine the steps to determining when to use game-based learning and what content best lends itself to this type of design. Next, we'll examine specific gaming design elements and how and when to best apply these to various aspects of your training design. Last, we'll dive into the ins and outs of operationalizing these gaming principles when authoring the content with an authoring tool. For each stage we'll unpack a highly interactive game-based sample Drive-Thru Service Game: Be a Headset Hero (demo: https://dki.io/ec426543) and visually examine specific aspects of this learning to illustrate these key questions. But this is more than a presentation, it's a discussion. While we have identified many of the types of questions you are likely to face in the design and development process, we can't anticipate every question you may have about developing game-based learning. To this point, we encourage you to review the sample and provide us with your specific questions in advance at: https://www.dominknow.com/devlearn-2022, so you can help us to further enhance this discussion and dive into game-based learning.

501 BYOD: Adaptive Tracking: Build a Dynamic Menu with Storyline Variables & Triggers

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Thursday, October 27

Trinidad AB

One of the best things about on-demand/self-paced learning is its ability to be non-linear. Courses full of exploration and learner control are great, but how do you help the learner track their progress? The Articulate Storyline Player Menu works well for page-turners, but not as well for non-linear exploration. Have you ever considered using an interactive custom menu slide but didn't know where to start? Are you intimidated by variables and triggers? Have you ever looked at other people's courses and wished yours could be just as cool?

In this BYOD session you will learn the basics of Articulate Storyline variables and triggers. Without any prior understanding of computer programming you will walk out knowing that you, too, can use advanced features of Storyline to wow your stakeholders. Together we will dissect and demystify variables and triggers in non-technical terms. We will then use these two concepts to build an interactive course menu that tracks completion of course activities and changes dynamically to show the learner what has (or has not) been accomplished. By the end of this session you will know that you, too, can utilize advanced features of Storyline to wow your stakeholders.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The definition and purpose of Storyline variables and triggers
  • How variables and triggers can enhance the learner experience
  • How to use variables and triggers to set actions that are dependent on learner progress
  • How you can use these features to create an interactive menu that informs the learner of their progress through the course
  • How to apply these concepts to 360 images for a truly immersive menu experience

Technology discussed:

Articulate Storyline 360

508 Designing with Care: Self-led Learning Solutions

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Thursday, October 27

Antiqua A

It isn't always up to the learning and development department to decide the start dates for training, whether it's training for onboarding, new rollouts, skills, recalibration, etc. It can be logistically challenging for leaders who need workers to start earlier or later than the scheduled dates of the set onboarding program. Additionally, live instructor-led programs are great for establishing company culture but due to complexity, they can be costly. What if you could make a learner-led training experience that still provides virtual or in-person connections with intentional cultural moments, as well as equip learners with skills beyond the tasks necessary to do their jobs?

In this session we'll explore how to engage new employees from the beginning of their onboarding experience to own their development with every training thereafter. Drawing on experience at Chick-fil-A where leadership, resilience, adaptability, communication, and teamwork are embedded in the training experience, you’ll see how learners can have the same level of ownership over their learning as they do for responsibilities in their actual jobs. You’ll recognize the importance of designing self-led learning so all audiences are involved beyond the learner audience (e.g., leaders, SMEs, coaches, mentors, etc.), and how learners need to create moments and resources with their leaders, SMEs, and coaches to be used on the job. By the end of this session, you'll feel empowered to design learner-led training solutions and create training with intentionality, thus creating a culture of learning, and make development tools work for your designs and not the other way around.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The importance of learners owning their own learning and development
  • Where to start when designing learner-led training
  • How to be intentional with every component of the learning design
  • Why incorporating all audiences involved into the design is critical
  • How to design around your learner and not just the learning tools or platforms available

1:15 PM - 2:15 PM Thursday, October 27

Antiqua B

New technology is appearing inside and outside L&D at an unprecedented rate. Some are taken up with great analysis and others without a clear answer to the basic question of why. Move too slow and you’ll adopt a solution that’s soon obsolete; too quickly and deeper analysis is missed. You're left with an overpriced and/or overhyped tool that doesn’t meet your needs.

The call to action today isn’t so much where to look for emerging technology, but how to look!

Join our Guild Masters as they share their practical insights on navigating the pitfalls of emerging technology research, experimentation, and selection. We’ll also take a more visionary look at how technology, and it’s use outside of our industry, is challenging how people perceive learning and the role of L&D itself.

EXPOB204 How Public Blockchains Can Provide Trust for Digital Credentials & Badges

1:15 PM - 1:45 PM Thursday, October 27

Expo Hall

Research shows that people leave companies that don’t offer training that benefits their career. So good training is essential, however you also have to make learners feel like they own those results too, and they can’t feel that if it’s locked up inside your LMS. There is no use taking qualifications out of one closed system to put it in another. Unfortunately, so many systems only use their own database, their own app, or their own blockchain and restrict learners’ access and usage of their own qualifications.

What if you could issue learning in a universal open learning format, with inbuilt verified authenticity that can be accepted by a learner in any compatible lifelong learning wallet? Using the latest technologies like blockchain, Web3, and distributed ID’s, can this be a reality?

Offering great learning means offering learning that has an ROI for both employer and employee. In this session, you'll learn about the latest Web3 standards in digital certificates, learner records, and badges. This will include a vision of lifelong learning, and the practical steps to make this a reality and enable your organization to start issuing Web3 credentials using these open standards.

Key takeways:

  • Lifelong learning records and skills have much greater scope to benefit the learner
  • Web 3.0 makes it possible for learning institutions to issue fully verifiable digital records of learning
  • The future is decentralized, trustable, and private
  • The standards exist today to make it a reality. You'll understand about how to attract & retain great people by issuing verified learning credentials.

Technologies discussed:

Blockchain, SaaS, distributed ID’s, badges, CLR’s

603 No Code xAPI Implementation

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Thursday, October 27

Barbados AB

It is likely that you have heard about xAPI and are familiar with its benefits for tracking learning more accurately, but you probably aren't using it yet. For the longest time xAPI required custom JavaScript, even if you used tools like Captivate or Storyline. Many eLearning developers found it too complicated and laborious.

Fortunately, it has gotten a lot easier, and in most cases, it does not even require you to write code. You can still use code to fine-tune your tracking, but it is not necessary. In this session, we will explore ways to send xAPI without writing a single line of code.

We will first explore how to publish from Articulate Storyline and Adobe Captivate without doing anything extra. You can get basic xAPI tracking in your LMS and then control the data you can send in Storyline with some simple triggers, and even send the statements to an external LRS from your LMS. If you need to host your content outside an LMS, then we will walk through a free tool that will give you the code you need to copy and paste right into Storyline or Captivate. Finally, we will wrap up by talking about a way to track everyday applications like SurveyMonkey, Trello, or Google Docs to Watershed LRS or Grassblade LRS without having to write a single line of code. Now you have no excuse to start using xAPI right away!

In this session, you will learn:

  • Exporting to cmi5 packages for xAPI tracking (in Storyline & Captivate)
  • How to add custom triggers to Storyline to control what gets sent over to the LRS
  • How to capture who the actor is when content is outside an LMS
  • How to capture the actor and control all xAPI statements being sent to the LRS
  • To connect everyday applications like SurveyMonkey to an LRS using Zapier

Technology discussed:

Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, xAPI Builder, Zapier, SurveyMonkey

605 Resource Templates: Learning Science for Content Development

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Thursday, October 27

Montego DE

What do you do when you are faced with a suite of support resources created ad hoc and tasked with creating a learning strategy? The context is a complex software product developed internally and rolled out for clients. A more consistent approach was definitely needed‚ ideally one grounded in how we actually think, work, and learn. If you want to be principled, how do the cognitive and learning sciences guide you to a solution?

In this session, we will discuss the context, the process followed, and the lessons learned. We'll look at how learning science was applied to review the resources and develop principles, the pivot from checklists to content templates, and how they were tested and refined. The different evaluations performed will also be unpacked. We'll review what a performance strategy means, and the benefits of a template approach. Come look at what learning science says for meeting real customer education needs in a dynamic environment.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How a context suite meets performance needs
  • How testing can be done in real environments
  • What learning science means in practice
  • What templates should contain to provide needed guidance

609 Out of One, Many: Creating Instructional Media Derivatives from Video

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Thursday, October 27

Antiqua A

Many designers create video-based content without considering how to leverage a video into other forms of media. Your audience will consume your message in various formats based upon where they are in the learning journey, their preferred method for consuming instructional content, and the learning environment. What if there was a proven workflow that could plan video, audio, image, and text-based outputs that aligned to your audience's needs?

In this session you will learn how to plan your video production to produce various media derivatives that will support the different stages of a learning journey. You'll experience how to take a single video and create transcripts, job aids, images for print, podcasts, and more. The process begins by investigating all the potential outputs that are required for your audience and their learning journeys, and then putting in place a cohesive media production plan with a single video as the foundation. Next, you will experience the steps required to transform one piece of instructional media into another, and important format considerations along the way.

In this session, you will learn:

  • The opportunity when creating an instructional media derivative plan
  • How to create text-based outputs from a video
  • How to leverage a single video into a job aid
  • Why a video can be a great starting point for an audio podcast

610 Create Great Learning Results with the Power of Personas

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Thursday, October 27

Jamaica AB

When designing learning, it's easy to get so focused on the content and goals that you forget about the learners. Following a "content is king" approach without focusing on your learners can create learning that subject matter experts and stakeholders love but doesn't help learners learn…or even makes it difficult to learn. Identifying some audience characteristics during an initial analysis helps but doesn't go far enough to keep the learners alive and in focus as you build learning and make myriad design decisions that have the potential to hinder learning.

Unleash the power of personas! In this session we'll discuss why personas are effective and provide tips, templates, and best practices you can start using right away to create and apply these powerful tools in your learning design processes. We'll discuss the research demonstrating how personas streamline and make your learning design process and the learning experiences you create more effective for learners. We'll explore case studies to illustrate how you can create different types of personas and apply them throughout the learning design process to provide powerful learning results. We'll practice creating a plan to gather information about your audience, and deciding which characteristics to use to develop your personas so your design supports your learners and achieves learning objectives. You'll complete an activity to practice creating personas and applying them to design decisions, and receive templates and samples to start using in your own design work right away.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Why personas are powerful tools in designing effective learning experiences for your learners
  • What makes a useful persona including relatability, relevance to learning objectives, and correct level of detail
  • Multiple replicable real-life examples of how personas can be implemented into learning design processes to create powerful learning experiences
  • The best ways to gather information to create personas including analyzing data, empathizing, and interviewing
  • How to create personas including identifying key characteristics and differentiators that relate to learning objectives
  • How to use templates, tips, and best practices to implement personas in your learning design processes

611 Expanding Scope: What IDs Can Learn from Product Management

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Thursday, October 27

Antiqua B

Learning professionals often perform a wide variety of functions. In a given day (or hour!) we may be a technologist, copywriter, graphic designer, project manager, UX designer, marketer, community manager, and more. Many of us have learned these skills informally, relying on available resources to inform our practice. Adding to this challenge, the language that we use in our field doesn't always translate to the language of the business—especially when the business is used to L&D developing and managing courses. How can we better understand and communicate the breadth of our work in a rapidly changing field?

Product managers and learning professionals share the same goal—helping people perform a task in support of a larger business need. In this session you'll look at your own field through the lens of product management. We'll talk about the role of product manager, drawing from our own experience in program management, instructional design, and product management. You'll learn how the principles outlined in the Product Manifesto can help you approach performance issues in a holistic, human-centered way. You'll extend your instructional design toolkit by exploring additional skills, frameworks, and resources used for user research, problem identification, solution design, user experience, and marketing. By the end of the session, you will have a new way of looking at your role, new ways to communicate and demonstrate your value, and new resources to help guide you.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How your goals, competencies, and skills overlap with the growing field of product management
  • How viewing your own work through the lens of product management can help you create more human-centered and performance-focused performance solutions
  • Which frameworks and concepts used in product management can support your instructional design activities
  • Where to find resources for product managers that can benefit your own practice

702 BYOD: How to Capture Like a Pro with Chrome DevTools and Snagit

8:30 AM - 9:30 AM Friday, October 28

Trinidad AB

Whether you're capturing images of websites, documents, or application interfaces, screenshots are one of the most basic building blocks that we use as training developers. Basic screengrabs may work in a pinch, but the final quality of our work can only be as good as the quality of the assets we build it with. Yet, the quality of the average screenshot isn't great. Each capture is its own unique puzzle to get right. For instance, how do you get a clean, high-resolution capture when the subject is larger than your screen? And how do you deal with sensitive information caught in the capture, without resorting to blur or censor effects?

In this session we will answer these questions and more as you learn to master the art of capturing pixel-perfect screenshots and screen recordings, every time. You will take a comprehensive look at the variables involved in your recording environment—from the resolution and magnification of your operating system to the application zoom and dimensions of your target capture window. You will learn about the surprising role of basic coding fundamentals in screen capture, and how you can edit any webpage in real-time using Chrome DevTools. For those who are not yet comfortable using code, you will find a fun and risk-free way of practicing code yourself. In our field of work there are very few skills you can master without significant time and effort. Thankfully, perfecting the art of screen capture is one. Bring your laptop and prepare to become your team's capture guru.

In this session, you will learn:

  • To master the art of capturing pixel-perfect screenshots and screen recordings, every time
  • How to use Chrome DevTools to edit webpages pre-capture
  • Why it's important to properly stage your capture environment carefully
  • How to batch your capture process and ensure consistency across screenshots
  • How to adjust screen resolution, zoom, and capture dimensions
  • How to emulate the screens of tablets and mobile phones for accurate captures from your PC or Mac
  • How to use Photoshop templates to incorporate your screenshots into photorealistic 3-D scenes

Technology discussed:

Snagit from Techsmith, Chrome DevTools, Adobe Photoshop

Participant technology requirements:

A laptop (MAC or PC) with Google Chrome, a free trial of Snagit from Techsmith (and Adobe Photoshop if possible, though not required)

707 Visual Design Strategies for Incredible Online Learning

8:30 AM - 9:30 AM Friday, October 28

Bermuda AB

The value of visual design in learning is often overlooked and misunderstood by many instructional designers and SMEs. Without explicit frameworks, incorporating sound visual design principles and elements becomes a frustrating and time-consuming burden rather than an impactful expression of creativity. Together we will explore the answer to two of instructional design's most pressing questions. What looks good? And why is it important that it looks that way?

In this session you will not only learn how to apply visual design strategies to create aesthetically appealing content, but we will also get familiar with the most notorious and common visual design missteps and offenses. We will familiarize ourselves with the data and research highlighting the impact of white space, balance, proximity and alignment, hierarchy, contrast, and type while concurrently demonstrating how to explain these concepts to SMEs. Lastly, we will share outstanding resources for visual design collaboration and inspiration that will save you time and frustration. At the conclusion of this session it is our hope that you will have increased your own informed appreciation for the power of visual design in learning and be equipped to share that understanding with stakeholders and collaborators.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How good visual design promotes engagement, knowledge retention, and learner persistence
  • What design principles make visual design for learning most effective
  • Which tools best facilitate visual design collaboration
  • How to explain the value of visual design principles to SMEs

708 How to Create an Effective Accessibility Team in Your Company

8:30 AM - 9:30 AM Friday, October 28

Antiqua A

Most designers and companies know it is important to create accessible content for their learners. However, often a company only has only a few experts that know how to create accessible content and those experts are in charge of teaching and training everyone else in the company on how to do so. When the responsibility of creating accessible content falls on a small number of individuals in the company, it is hard to go above and beyond for our learners because the majority of individuals in the company would just focus on meeting the minimum requirements. What if there is a way to disperse the responsibility of creating accessible content across the company and have individuals organically take ownership over creating accessible materials?

In this session you will learn about effective ways to create an accessibility team at your company. You will hear about the challenges and successes from real-life examples of team formation at different institutions. You will also learn about the common reasons for why there may not be buy-in and support to developing accessible content. In addition to the lack of institutional buy-in, this session will also cover what challenges subject matter experts typically face when creating accessible content, and how to address their needs. You will leave this session knowing how to address common challenges, how to select meaningful members to start a team, how to organically spread accessibility knowledge across the company, and how to explain the importance of going above and beyond for our learners to your company executives.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Why creating accessible content is important for your learners
  • How to address why there may not be buy-in to create accessible content beyond the minimum requirements
  • How to select meaningful members to create an accessibility team
  • How to organically spread accessibility knowledge and expertise throughout the company with your accessibility team
  • How to talk to executives about the importance of creating an accessibility team to create a culture that embraces the development of accessible learning content

710 Agile Project Management: Harnessing Change

8:30 AM - 9:30 AM Friday, October 28

Jamaica AB

The software industry is embracing Agile project management and there is much that we in learning & development can learn from them. Whether you’re using SAM, LLAMA®, Scrum, or still exploring your options, there’s a lot to be learned from Agile teams in the ways that they manage their relationships and communications with the business in order to deliver their work on time, in budget, and in line with expectations–even as those expectations evolve throughout the project. However, a strict implementation of Agile methods may not apply to your L&D work. What can we borrow from this useful mindset and approach, and what do we need to do to get started?

In this session you’ll hear why and how an L&D team implemented Agile methods, what it took to bring about the change, and lessons learned along the way. You’ll learn about the tools that were implemented, how the team embraced the change, and how the team’s performance metrics changed in just a year … and what’s in the plan for next year.

In this session you will learn:

  • A quick definition of Agile and how it‚Äôs used in the L&D space
  • How Agile helps L&D teams meet business needs when those needs are rapidly changing
  • Lessons learned from a recent implementation of Agile
  • Metrics you can use to measure your team‚Äôs performance

805 Pitch Two Options to Move from Order Taker to Trusted Partner

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Friday, October 28

Montego DE

Have you been on the receiving end of requests to create workplace training you know is unlikely to get results? Have you found yourself feeling more like an order taker vs. a trusted partner capable of delivering impactful learning? Are efforts to employ action mapping in the workplace met with pushback? Helping stakeholders buy in to an alternative to their solution can be an uphill battle–especially when the working relationship is in early stages, a power imbalance exists, or the designer's communication with stakeholders or client is indirect. Building a mutually beneficial relationship is a journey. What if there was a simple technique to create an opportunity for productive dialogue about what workplace learning can accomplish?

In this session you'll learn the two-solution pitch you can use to aid the transition from an order taker to trusted business partner. The two-solution pitch offers a diplomatic approach to highlighting the true problem the business wants to address and creating alignment with and among stakeholders. You'll learn how to use information from front end analysis to determine two elements of the basic pitch: (1) key characteristics of the final learning product or experience, regardless of form, and (2) a second learning solution for consideration. You'll explore tips and tricks for effectively framing the recommended learning solution for the pitch, communicating the key characteristics of all solution options, and maintaining a diplomatic approach throughout. You'll leave this session with a simple and effective technique that empowers you, the learning professional, to share insights about results-focused learning solutions in a way that respects stakeholders as the knowledgeable decision makers that they are. Templates will be provided for you to try your hand at crafting your own two-solution pitch.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Why a two-solution pitch can help you to build trust with stakeholders
  • What makes a good two-solution pitch and when to employ this technique
  • How to utilize information from front end analysis to identify characteristics that matter most to stakeholders and outline a more effective learning solution option
  • How to craft a simple yet thoughtful pitch that incorporates the originally requested solution plus a contrasting option more likely to deliver results
  • How to maintain a diplomatic approach when delivering the pitch
  • Why the pitch might benefit future discussions of learning solutions, even if the less-effective solution is selected in the short term

806 Create Compelling Content for Virtual & Hybrid Training with PowerPoint

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Friday, October 28

Montego A

Tedious remote learning, Zoom fatigue, or the classic click-through eLearning are all uninspiring ways to share knowledge. Yet that's exactly what learners are experiencing. It's both boring and ineffective. It's well recognized, but people either cite 'compliance' or 'lack of tools' to fix it, or try to solve it with 'fun' and 'exciting' eLearning that just employs gimmicks and flashy content around the dull and boring content, so there's no improvement in knowledge transfer. What people need to learn is how to create compelling and effective eLearning using tools they already have. And, amazingly, PowerPoint can be the answer.

The importance of compelling content is becoming ever more apparent, but trying to do that with the same tools you've always had can be hard, right? Wrong. PowerPoint gives you terrific tools to create the kind of dynamic, visual content that you need to capture your audience's attention with functions that allow interactive sequences, navigable content to respond to your audience, and pop quizzes for informal knowledge checks. And then easy ways to share that content with learners in your LMS—whether it's saving as PDF, video, or converting to HTML5. It's a superb tool for quickly and easily creating effective visual learning content. Come along to this masterclass packed with live demonstrations of how to create compelling content for successful training in a virtual environment.

In this session, you will learn:

  • To create dynamic visuals that support persuasive stories to engage your audience
  • To develop professional looking designs for presentations and other content
  • How to build interactive sequences that respond to your audience's need
  • To become a PowerPoint legend, with techniques to make effective presentations quickly and easily

808 Assessments: Are Yours Based on Research or Hearsay?

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Friday, October 28

Barbados AB

Many designers know that both formative and summative assessments should be included in the course materials, but all assessments should not be treated equally. Why do so many designers rely on hearsay, what "feels" right, or never venture outside the "create of a video and multiple-choice questions with feedback" and call it good? What question types best support learning; when and how is feedback delivery the most effective; and what are best practices for using formative and summative assessments to improve outcomes?  Countless hours and funds have been used to determine best practices for assessments; do you know what those best practices are?

In this session you'll learn evidence-based best practices for creating both online summative and formative assessments for adult learners. You'll dive into what the research says about what assessment question types to use, how to improve learning outcomes with formative and summative assessments, and the importance of feedback timing and delivery methods. Next, you'll become familiar with a variety of different assessment software available for free or to purchase. You'll leave this session empowered with knowledge and resources to create evidence-based assessments for your organization.

In this session you will learn:

  • To define and identify formative and summative assessments
  • Best practices for creating evidence-based formative assessments online for adult learners
  • Best practices for using feedback in assessments to facilitate learner success
  • How assessments can be used to improve learning outcomes for your intended audience
  • What assessment software is available to facilitate the creation of evidence-based assessments for your intended audience

809 A Learning Simulation Case Study with Taco Builder

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Friday, October 28

Martinique AB

When onboarding new hires or retraining existing resources, employees need space and place to practice tasks, processes, procedures, new tools, or difficult conversations with customers. Active working environments aren't always conducive to that practice, whether it's because the environment is unsafe, the procedure is complex (oil and gas, energy, telecommunications, construction, or production applications), there's potential for waste or impact to brand reputation (retail, customer service, hospitality, food service), or there's a steep learning curve (new software, equipment, or machinery). In such cases, eLearning can help simulate activities for learners to practice new concepts.

This case study reviews how, as part of a larger blended learning strategy, we used an open practice environment to create a safe space for new employees of our client's franchise restaurants, Rusty Taco, to practice building taco recipes without wasting ingredients, eating up valuable manager time, and risking customer orders. We'll walk through how we worked with SMEs to document recipe steps, photograph ingredients and the taco build process at each step, and replicated the restaurant's typical kitchen layout and assembly methods in a simulated environment. We'll walk through considerations for designing different simulated environments or situations, including how to adjust the stress level for the desired learning outcomes by adjusting time constraints or branching options, and how to increase the difficulty level as learners gain proficiency. After reviewing our process, we'll dive into some ways to apply the same techniques to other learning applications that would be a good fit for elearning simulations and practice environments including automotive repair, manufacturing, production and assembly, software simulations, point of sale systems, situational soft skills training, mechanical applications, aviation, healthcare, and more.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How simulations provide a safe environment for practice
  • How simulations allow for learning through mistakes
  • How simulations can help people learn new soft skills, processes, procedures, hardware, and software
  • How to design a simulated environment and adjust for difficulty and stress level
  • How to use eLearning simulations in other industries and use cases
