He led his class to build one of the first news websites that streamed video in 1996. In 2011 he launched the very first dedicated mobile application development program. When thinking about training and performance support, it should not be an either /or proposition. The most effective mobile learning solutions should provide ways to support both! During the Mobile Training Implementation Framework (MoTIF) research project, ADL collected data and feedback from many mLearning and performance support experts. One of the tools developed as part of this effort is a new reference model for mLearning design.

 In this session you will learn about the mLearning Reference Model, which embodies and integrates mobile learning constraints and best practices at the fundamental level of the design process itself, leading the ISD to consider using alternative learning approaches, unique mobile device capabilities, and leveraging context and usage patterns of users in ways that desktop DL and classroom learning do not usually address. The model is designed as a support tool for ISDs, with flowcharts and outlines guiding the user through the process.

Of course, all employees want learning at the moment of need on their mobile devices. What they want to know, when they want to know it, and how they choose to learn it: Just-in-time learning is not only what employees expect, but also a proven model to increase business outcomes. You may want to provide performance support tools; however, gaining executive support, funding, IT support, and so forth, can be challenging. A performance support model requires changing the conversation with all the stakeholders.

In this session you will use the Learning Model Canvas to create the story for changing the mind-set and mechanics of the corporate learning model to help support mobile learning. You will identify the top-two learning organization patterns and top-five learning organization models. Using examples of each, you will be able to identify your current model, the dependencies needed for implementing a performance support learning model, and actionable next steps for implementation in the workplace. In this hands-on session you will explore a number of quick tips that will help make your visuals jump. You will learn how to add depth to flat graphics using a variety of filters and blurs. You will learn how to create one icon for your app and then very quickly produce all the various icon sizes you need for the app as well as the stores (iTunes and Play Store). Many may struggle to determine if they need to design three totally unique solutions: one for phones, one for tablets and one for desktops and laptops. Is storyboarding even feasible in this situation? 

This session will provide concrete strategies for designing a robust learning solution for large screens, a touch- and motion-friendly solution for tablets, and a performance support version for phones, all at the same time. You will explore a novel approach to instructional design for multiple devices that considers all needs at the outset of the project. The DeMaND Project is a consortium project funded by the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program that trains students for careers in skilled trades, including welding, construction, HVAC, electrical, CDL, and heavy equipment. The project works with students from areas with chronically high unemployment and generational poverty. Students have difficulty entering the workforce and retaining employment. The project needed a mechanism to help students learn about job opportunities and stay connected with their instructors and one another, and to support students toward employment.

In this session you will learn how the DeMaND Workforce project worked with reliable coders to design a mobile tool to help support students transitioning to the workforce. You will explore how the tool provided a collaborative space for students to talk about careers and challenges, stay connected with their instructors and others at the college, and talk with students at other colleges in similar programs.
