GS1 KEYNOTE: Designing the Future

8:30 AM - 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 8

Lone Star A-E

We’re entering a new era, one in which designers create experiences centering not only on physical objects but on the fabric of digital information that surrounds us. When a social network automatically checks us into a location, or cashiers can suggest new products based on our purchase history, or our connected TV calls up our favorite shows when we walk into the living room, it may seem like magic. But these are carefully designed experiences; they simply appear invisible. That’s the next great challenge for designers of learning experiences: weaving the threads of time, technology, information, and access seamlessly and elegantly into learning the same way designers are building them into our everyday lives. In this fascinating opening keynote, Scott Dadich takes you on a journey that focuses on the future of intertwining technologies, designs, and behaviors, a future that will bring incredible changes to the ways we live, work, and learn.

Scott Dadich

Former Editor-in-Chief

WIRED Magazine

Scott Dadich is a co-CEO and founder of Godfrey Dadich Partners, and a former editor-in-chief of WIRED magazine. He also served the brand as a creative director, leading it to three consecutive National Magazine Awards in design and overseeing the development of WIRED’s groundbreaking iPad app. As editor-in-chief from 2012 to 2017, Mr. Dadich spearheaded the launch of WIRED’s first-ever design retreat; secured an exclusive interview with one of the world’s most wanted men, Edward Snowden; and collaborated on special issues with Bill Gates and filmmaker Christopher Nolan. Under his leadership, WIRED was recognized with eight National Magazine Award nominations, five Webby Awards, and 12 Society of Publication Designers medals; his body of work has been recognized with over 100 national design and editorial awards. He has served on the board of directors for the American Society of Magazine Editors, the Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers Design Council, and the nonprofit People’s Portfolio.

101 The ABCs of xAPI: Lessons Learned and Shared

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Wednesday, June 8

208

The Experience API (xAPI) has been in production for more than two years now, and it is becoming more important for training and development teams to learn the ABCs of this available set of technologies. Heed the call of that morning school bell and come ready to learn your ABCs. “A” is for the attributes, “B” is for benefits, and “C” is for the challenges of the xAPI experienced to date.

“A” is for the attributes: In this session, we will first discuss what the xAPI really is, how statements are structured, and how we typically see it being put into practice. “B” is for benefits: We plan to explore how the xAPI is being leveraged by progressive organizations to improve the learning experience, streamline tracking, perform common tasks, and drive engagement. Finally, “C” is for the myriad of challenges: Just because it’s out there doesn‘t mean your team will have the right platforms, tools, and mindset to take advantage of all the features (attributes) and benefits the xAPI has to offer.

In this session, you will learn:

  • Basic structure and tools that comprise the xAPI approach, including statement syntax, construction, and management
  • To determine which platforms and tools are xAPI ready and how they can be used in an existing learning environment
  • To balance when to use the xAPI over SCORM and whether they are mutually exclusive
  • To discover new use cases to apply tracking to nontraditional learning assignments and interactions
  • To contemplate new technical challenges to overcome with LMS integration, security, mobile access (even offline), and more

Audience:
Novice to advanced designers, developers, project managers, directors, and senior leaders.

102 BYOL: Moving Front-line Management Development from the Classroom to the Field

10:45 AM - 11:45 AM Wednesday, June 8

306

Organizations are investing more in developing front-line managers. Yet many are not satisfied with today’s solutions. They can provide high-quality learning content and deliver engaging classroom experiences, but they face a problem in helping learners transfer skills from the classroom and apply them in the field. How can we restructure front-line management development to reach beyond providing training and ensure that participants are actually proficient in the targeted skills?

In this session, you will learn of an approach for front-line managers based on leading participants through a journey that includes deliberate practice as a structured and tracked part of the program. Using technological support, a partnership is created between front-line managers and their direct managers to ensure both are accountable for the front-line manager’s progress. These journeys, while powerful, could be daunting without technology to make them simple to follow, track, and pursue. We will share the key ideas behind how we have structured the journey and leveraged mobile technologies to enable it to work in the field and on the go.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to make learning paths more powerful by incorporating a journey with deliberate practice
  • How to improve learning paths by soliciting conclusions and lessons learned from participants incrementally

In this session, you will learn how to shift from the traditional course delivery approach to a consultant’s mindset focusing on the performance needs of your organization. You’ll learn valuable strategies and effective questions you can ask to uncover the most efficient and effective solutions, whether they are courses, social and collaboration tools, performance support, or other lower-tech alternatives.

In this session, you will learn:

  • About factors that impact performance, including which ones training can and can’t address
  • About questions that you should ask and answer before beginning any learning program
  •  How to guide stakeholders to more efficient options

T104 Leveraging Mobile and Video to Scale Effective Learning

1:00 PM - 1:45 PM Wednesday, June 8

Expo Hall: Tools & Tech Stage

Online learning has addressed two out of the three major learning acts: accessibility and affordability. The third act, efficacy, has yet to be addressed at scale. Luckily, there are effective instructional techniques: practice, peer interactivity, self-reflection, and mentoring. In this session, learn how your organization can go beyond accessibility and affordability to address the third learning act. Now that everyone has a sophisticated video production company in his or her pocket (i.e., mobile phones), anyone can bring the magic of face-to-face learning—where learners practice, interact with one another, self-reflect, and receive coaching—to an online setting without degrading the learning efficacy.

406 Measure the Unmeasurable: How Mobile Can Transform the 70 of the 70:20:10

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Wednesday, June 8

310/311

The 70:20:10 model holds that 70 percent of learning happens informally on the job. However, there are a lot of distractions at work that inhibit the amount of learning that can be achieved—deadlines, coworker interruptions, meetings, etc. Also, since learning is an afterthought when performing your job, it’s a fairly inefficient process, especially when compared to the other 30 percent, where learning is typically the overarching theme.

In this session, you’ll explore ways mobile technologies can be used to squeeze the best and most efficient learning process out of your normal, day-to-day work. Workers typically have a mobile device on them while performing a job—no matter if that job is computer-based, communication-focused, or manual labor—and this session will explore creative opportunities for mobile to revolutionize the 70 percent in the 70:20:10 model. All mobile technologies will be considered.

411 Atomic Performance Support! Mobile App for Nuclear Medicine Production

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Wednesday, June 8

308

Learning and development professionals strive to meet on-the-job performance support needs in a typical work environment. Now, imagine the needs of a laboratory where employees are responsible for manufacturing radiopharmaceuticals (radioactive drugs). Cardinal Health technicians operate in a highly regulated lab environment with ever-changing operating procedures that affect a manufacturing process in which one misstep could impact a patient.

Session attendees will learn how the Cardinal Health nuclear pharmacy services team developed and implemented Albert, an HTML5 mobile app, to increase application of information and supplement existing training with on-the-job performance support. Presenters will demonstrate how Albert is currently being used on iPads at each facility to provide technicians just-in-time access to video demonstrations, job aids, training guides, and a library of current operating procedures. The session will also include a high-level overview of the technology used, lessons learned, and recommendations for others considering a similar solution.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How Cardinal Health successfully implemented Albert
  • What benefits were gained from using Albert
  • What to consider when developing a similar app
  • About different technology options available

Audience:
Novice and intermediate designers, developers, project managers, and directors.

Technology discussed in this session:
Mobile performance support apps, video, HTML5, and iPad.

412 New Approaches to Using Video in the Classroom

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Wednesday, June 8

209

We all know that video is an incredibly effective learning method. Learners can remember up to six times more from trainings and classes that incorporate videos than they do from those that don’t. Many trainers, however, are not sure how to most effectively use videos; simply showing clips is not the best method. In fact, it’s a missed opportunity!

In this session, you will learn five major approaches to engaging learners with video. Most importantly, these are new approaches, as opposed to simply finding and using video clips in new ways. You will see how these are applicable to both corporate training workshops and academic classrooms. Finally you will learn real, easy-to-apply solutions that you can begin using right away. They are simple to learn, but make a big impact in your training.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to develop a plan to effectively incorporate videos into your training
  • Best practices in using videos in trainings and the classroom
  • About resources to continue learning about videos in training and development
  • About a new paradigm of videos in training and development

Audience:
Novice to advanced, designers, project managers, managers, and directors.

Technology discussed in this session:
Mobile apps, MP4 videos, instructional design software (including Captivate and Camtasia), learning management software.

413 Forgetting What We Know: Re-conceiving Performance Support as Performance Learning

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Wednesday, June 8

303/304

With its shift of learning away from information overload delivered in large chunks to learning in more manageable increments within the context of work, performance support is already an improvement on traditional methods of training. Looking to further improve learner performance, in this session we’ll discuss the possibilities of imagining “support” as “learning” with insights from psychological and neuroscience research. Building on unconventional notions about the nature of memory, constructing learning methods on a “remembering” curve, and attending to the learning environment are just a few of the opportunities we will explore in this open conversation with panelists.

F03 Using Video for Learning in the YouTube Era

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Wednesday, June 8

Lone Star A-E

Today’s learners demand rich multimedia, and it’s becoming easier to deliver it to them. The challenge facing trainers is to have the skills to produce and edit video and to do so on a training budget, not a Hollywood budget.

Fortunately, the YouTube era has opened up new and exciting models for low-budget multimedia. This session will review stylistic tips and tricks used by the most popular YouTubers, online instructors, and social video participants for creating authentic, engaging, ultra-low-budget productions designed to match the media being consumed by learners on a daily basis in their YouTubing, Redditing, Pinteresting, and Facebooking.

In this session, you will learn:

  • About the role of authenticity in learning media
  • How today’s most popular YouTube and social video producers engage viewers with authenticity, not production value
  • Tips and tricks used by producers everywhere to make their production processes manageable for ultra-low-budget productions
  • From several “best and worst” online videos used for training

Audience:
Novice to advanced designers, developers, project managers, and directors.

Technology discussed in this session:
Streaming services, video production equipment (cameras, microphones, lighting), smartphones, and smartphone apps.
