The process of building education, training, and learning programs is changing. Learning is changing. As technology continues to advance, the shift towards learning and development initiatives that require engineering support is growing at an ever-increasing speed. The Learning and Engineering Summit, hosted by IEEE ICICLE, explores the challenging L&D landscape and the emergence of the learning engineering profession.
During the summit you will have direct experience developing skills frameworks for eLearning professionals to accommodate the increasing dependence upon digital platform technologies, the data produced by these platforms, and the analyses conducted on those data. From this information, you will identify a course of action to anticipate and develop essential professional skills to engage in digital learning and eLearning initiatives of all forms in the future.

The need for technical competence related to education and training programs has existed for decades. However, as technology continues to advance, the shift towards learning and development initiatives that require engineering support is growing at an ever-increasing speed. As we open our summit, we will examine what learning engineering is and why it is critical to the future of learning and development.

Learn about ICICLE, the open-forum, community-driven group that is working on defining and supporting the profession of learning engineering. You’ll meet members of the group, learn about the work they are doing, and find out how you can get involved.

What Are the Competencies of Learning Engineering?
Learning engineering is different than instructional design and development. During this session, you will examine the knowledge and skills that are needed by learning engineers and collaborate on a framework for what the learning engineering skill set looks like.

Developing Learning Engineering Skills
As the competencies of learning engineering emerge, so too will the need to identify way for individuals to develop learning engineering skills. During this session, you will work with your peers to identify the resources and opportunities needed to develop learning engineering skills, resulting in a beginning curricula framework.

Design for Learning vs. Engineering for Learning: What’s the Difference?
Understanding where learning engineering differs from (and complements) traditional learning design is a critical component of developing learning engineering competency. In this session, you will explore the two areas, identify key differences, and examine how the varying skills sets enhance you as an individual and your team as a whole.

Panel: Putting the Pieces Together
During the last session of the day, our panel of experts will put everything we’ve explored into context. You will discover how learning engineering fits into a number of existing and emerging trends in organizational learning, and how it forms the foundation of tomorrow’s learning and development efforts.

Closing: Where Do We Go From Here?
As the Learning Engineering Summit closes, we will explore ways that you can take action on what you have learned today for you, your career, and your organization. You will also discuss how you can be an active participant in the development of the learning engineering profession in the years to come.
